Reaching Our Goals: Immunization Initiatives

On Friday, July 30, 2010, the Illinois Chapter of the American Academy of Pediatrics will offer a FREE seminar The Business Side of Vaccines: Immunization Information You Can Use. This seminar is designed for pediatricians, family physicians, nurse practitioners, office managers and practice billing/coding staff as well as other allied health care professionals caring for children. This seminar will feature local expert faculty presenting topics that highlight ideal business practices related to vaccine financing and reimbursement. The seminar will combine lectures, question-and-answer sessions and networking to allow attendees the opportunity to interact with the faculty in solving the problems encountered in daily practice.

  • The seminar will be held from 9:30am – 2:30pm at Sinai Children’s Hospital, 1500 S. California Avenue, Chicago, IL 60608 .
  • By attending the 2010 ICAAP Business Side of Vaccines: Immunization Information You Can Use seminar, participants will:
  • Examine a full range of issues related to coding for the administration of vaccines & interpret various vaccine-related clinical examples presented to the audience and code patient encounters appropriately
  • Review the five coding pearls: using time as the key factor; reporting services when patient is not physically present; consultation codes for pre-op exams, pediatric procedures; and special services
  • Discuss vaccine recalls, mandatory reporting of communicable diseases, VAERS and vaccine documentation
  • Review recent changes to the 2010 immunization schedule, discuss vaccine safety and approaches to talking to parents about vaccines

The following sessions are included on the seminar program (session learning objectives are included below as well):

This Won’t Hurt a Bit:: Coding for Immunizations

  • Examine the business aspects of immunization delivery including information about immunization coding for reimbursement; and existing resources for improving the efficiency for delivering immunizations
  • Interpret various vaccine-related clinical examples presented to the audience and code the patient encounters appropriately

Coding Pearls that You Can Use

  • Review the following five coding pearls:
    • Using time as the key factor
    • Reporting services when the patient is not physically present
    • Consultation codes for pre-op exams
    • Pediatric procedures
    • Special Services
  • Interpret various clinical examples presented to the audience and code the patient encounters appropriately

Vaccine Recall, Reporting, and Documentation: What You Need to Know

  • Discuss updates to the VFC program, identify protocols related to emergency preparedness and planning, handling vaccine recall issues.
  • Review VAERS, mandatory reporting of communicable diseases, and vaccine documentation

2010 Immunization Updates, Vaccine Safety, and Talking to Parents about Vaccines

  • Updates to the 2010 immunization schedule, including incorporating PCV13 into the immunization schedule, HPV for males
