Michele Lorand, MD, FAAP

Michele A. Lorand, M.D., FAAP is the chairperson of the ICAAP Committee on Child Abuse and Neglect (COCAN). Dr. Lorand is an attending pediatrician in the Department of Pediatrics at John H. Stroger, Jr. Hospital of Cook County, where she is the Chair of the Division of Child Protective Services and serves as the Medical Director of the Chicago Children’s Advocacy Center.  She is board-certified in Pediatrics and board-certified in the sub-specialty of Child Abuse Pediatrics. Dr. Lorand has worked in the field of Child Abuse Pediatrics since the 1980s and has been appointed to numerous advisory boards and committees relevant to child abuse including the Illinois Attorney General Forensic Advisory Review Board, the Cook County State’s Attorney Sex Crimes Advisory Board, the Cook County Child Death Review Team, the Child Endangerment and Risk Assessment Protocol Advisory Board, and the Children’s Justice Task Force.

Dr. Lorand is an Assistant Professor of Pediatrics at the Chicago Medical School and is the co-author of a medical textbook, Radiographic Atlas of Child Abuse: A Case Studies Approach; a contributing author to the Istanbul Protocol: Manual on the Effective Investigation of Torture and Other Cruel, Inhuman or Degrading Treatment or Punishment, published by the Office of the United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights; and the co-author of a chapter, “Informed Consent,” in Civetta, Taylor and Kirby’s Critical Care, 4th Edition. Dr. Lorand is also an elected member of the Helfer Society, an honorary professional society for physicians specializing in Child Abuse Pediatrics.
