Committee on Government Affairs

Back to ICAAP Committees

Illinois Chapter, American Academy of Pediatrics

The ICAAP Committee on Government Affairs (COGA) serves as a forum for ICAAP’s member pediatricians to learn about and become active on current state legislation.  Each year, ICAAP staff, lobbyists and the ICAAP Executive Committee identify policy priorities for ICAAP and review as many as 2,000 bills submitted to the Illinois General Assembly, identifying those most relevant to pediatrics and child health and determining if ICAAP should take a position.  The COGA meets to review those bills and positions and discuss how pediatricians can work with legislators to educate them on ICAAP priorities.

Past advocacy priority areas have included obesity and physical activity, insurance coverage for habilitative services, school health programs and services, healthy and safe births, gun control, and protection from injury by promoting bike helmets.
