Karin Vander Ploeg Booth, MD, FAAP

Dr. Vander Ploeg Booth is an Assistant Professor in the Section of Developmental and Behavioral Pediatrics (DBP) at the University of Chicago, as well as the DBP Fellowship Program director.  Her clinical practice involves seeing children with a variety of developmental and behavioral concerns both at the University of Chicago and the Erikson Institute Center for Children and Families.  A major focus of her career has been medical education of students, residents, fellows, interdisciplinary practitioners, and primary care providers about issues and topics within the field of DBP.  She is involved in a number of advocacy efforts on behalf of children with disabilities and their families within the Chicagoland area and the state of Illinois.

Janet Patterson, MD, FAAP

Dr. Janet Patterson is an Assistant Professor of Clinical Pediatrics in the Section of Child Development at the University of Illinois College of Medicine at Peoria. She completed her Developmental Behavioral Fellowship at The University of Chicago in 2013 after many years as a general pediatrician. She has previously served in Academic Pediatrics and as Pediatric Residency Program Director at the SIU School of Medicine, and as the Medical Director of a Federally Qualified Community Health Center.

Every day, the millions of Americans living with autism and their families face unique and daunting challenges that many of us will never fully appreciate. During National Autism Awareness Month, we renew our commitment to better understand autism spectrum disorder (ASD) and improve the lives of individuals living with it. A recent report by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) estimates that 1 in 68 children in the United States has been identified with ASD. This latest estimate makes it clear that autism affects the lives of millions of Americans – our friends, neighbors, colleagues and family members.

Northwestern University’s Feinberg School of Medicine, Ann & Robert H. Lurie Children’s Hospital of Chicago, and the Illinois Childhood Trauma Coalition have partnered to host the Symposium on Child Trauma in the Public Sector on July 18-19, 2013 at Northwestern University.  The symposium will focus on the Adverse Childhood Experiences Studies (ACES) and community violence and is intended for policymakers, clinicians, health care providers, child advocates, educators, and others who work with children.  View the flyer here.

House Bill 1063 Passes

After unanimous approval in the Illinois House and Senate, House Bill 1063 awaits Governor Quinn’s signature to become a law.  The legislation removes the criminal statute of limitations for sex offenses that occurred when the victim was under 18 years old and ensures that all survivors, many of who remain silent about childhood abuse for years, have the opportunity to seek justice.  Illinois joins 33 other states that have already begun extending the statue of limitations related to child sexual abuse.  For the full text of HB 1063, please click here.

2013 Head to Toe: The Midwest Interactive Infant-Toddler Conference 6.1.13

The Head to Toe Conference, presented by the Chicago Metro Association for the Education of Young Children, brings together more than 500 professionals in infant-toddler early care and education including early intervention, infant-toddler specialists, home visitors, social workers, mental health providers, physical and occupational therapists, pediatricians, dietitians, and other allied professionals.  Topic areas include Language and Literacy, Curriculum and Play, Temperament and Behavior, Family Centered Approaches to Improve the Quality of Care, and Physical Growth and Development.  The Conference will be held at the University Center Conference Chicago on June 1, 2013 from 8am-4pm.  ICAAP members and staff, including Dr. Larry Gray, Dr. Todd Ochs, and Rachel Sacks will be in attendance to present sessions on various topics.  Time and topics are listed below.
