Illinois Collecting and Reporting Pediatric Weight Assessment

The Illinois Department of Healthcare and Family Services (IDHFS) has confirmed to ICAAP that weight assessment is one of the child health quality measures that it will voluntarily report to the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services on an annual basis as part of its Children’s Health Insurance Program Reauthorization Act (CHIPRA) Quality Demonstration Project activities. Summary Report: Illinois Medicaid Physician Survey, Survey of State Medicaid Policies and Literature Review, and Survey of State Quality Measures

ICAAP’s Obesity Prevention Initiatives team is pleased to offer a Summary Report on its Review of State Medicaid Policies and Quality Measures, conducted in the April – June 2012 quarter. The activities undertaken by ICAAP identify Medicaid policies and programs outside of Illinois that should be considered for inclusion in the Illinois Medicaid program to improve the quality and delivery of care. Results of ICAAP Physician Survey on Obesity Care and Medicaid Coverage

Thank you to all the ICAAP members who participated in the survey regarding Medicaid coverage and reimbursement of obesity-related services. A summary of the survey results is available for download via the link below. These results will be utilized to advocate for more complete coverage and reimbursement and have shaped the development of a Maintenance of Certification (MOC) project and physician education modules. Illinois announces plan to enhance physical education in schools

On June 5, 2012, the Illinois State Board of Education (ISBE), the Illinois Department of Public Health (IDPH), and the Illinois Public Health Institute (IPHI) released the Illinois Enhanced Physical Education Strategic Plan. The Strategic Plan is a call to action to the education and health advocates and stakeholders to make daily, high-quality physical education a reality for all Illinois K-12 students. [...more]

Pediatric Obesity Payer Issue Report

The ICAAP Committee on Obesity’s Expert Panel on Coverage and Reimbursement is currently developing recommendations to address gaps in pediatric obesity coverage and reimbursement with Illinois payers. The Illinois Pediatric Obesity Payer Issue Report is a tool provided for pediatricians to identify and document issues related to these gaps. You can assist the Committee on Obesity by reporting a specific issue with coverage and reimbursement of obesity care as these occur. [...more]

ICAAP Members testify at Illinois Obesity Prevention Act Hearings

The Obesity Prevention Initiative Act (PA96-0155) required the Illinois Department of Public Health to hold three public hearings to gather testimony on the social and human costs of obesity and to highlight existing state and community level initiatives; identify existing plans and opportunities for action; inform policy makers and the public about effective solutions to the problem; and engage stakeholders to promote action to reduce obesity, improve nutrition and increase physical activity. Report on Impact of Sugar-Sweetened Beverages Available

A report has been released that examines the projected impact of a state tax on sugar-sweetened beverages. “Estimating the Potential Impact of Sugar-Sweetened and Other Beverage Excise Taxes in Illinois” outlines four tax increase scenarios using national and state data on beverage consumption and health outcomes. The report was issued in conjunction with a call to create an obesity prevention and public health fund for the state of Illinois. [...more]
