Reach Out and Read® prepares America’s youngest children to succeed in school by partnering with doctors to prescribe books and encourage families to read together.  ROR is based on a model that trains doctors and nurses to advise parents about the importance of reading aloud and to give books to children at well-child visits from six months to five years of age, with a special focus on children growing up in poverty. Pediatric waiting rooms become literacy rich environments, oftentimes with volunteer readers, where parents and children learn about the pleasure and techniques of looking at books together.

ROR of Illinois is a partnership with the Illinois Chapter of the American Academy of Pediatrics (ICAAP) and the Reach Out and Read National Center. ROR of Illinois strives to increase literacy and a love for books among children by ensuring that all Illinois children have access to books at an early age. Our goals are achieved by recruiting new ROR sites, providing technical assistance, coordinating provider training on literacy and how to promote reading, facilitating communication among existing sites, and assisting with fundraising to support book distribution.
