Reach Out and Read prepares America’s youngest children to succeed in school by partnering with doctors to prescribe books and encourage families to read together. Reach Out and Read is based on a model that trains doctors and nurses to advise parents about the importance of reading aloud and to give books to children at well-child visits from six months to five years of age, with a special focus on children growing up in poverty. Pediatric waiting rooms become literacy rich environments, oftentimes with volunteer readers, where parents and children learn about the pleasure and techniques of looking at books together.
How to Get Involved
You can get involved by donating new or gently used books to ROR of IL or by volunteering as a reader at an ROR clinic. Click here for information about volunteering or view the volunteer brochure here.
You can bring books and a love of reading into a child’s life today by making a monetary donation to ROR IL. Online donations via PayPal are a convenient way to give. Please visit the Support Us page to make a tax deductible donation today.
The Friends Board
Reach Out and Read Illinois has launched the Reach Out and Read Illinois Friends Board, created for those with a passion for literacy promotion and an interest in advancing the mission of Reach Out and Read. Members of the Friends Board will have the chance to actively communicate with Reach Out and Read Illinois via Facebook, and will receive regular updates on the program’s activities so they can participate. The commitment to join is simple:
1. Show your support for promoting early childhood literacy in Illinois by liking us on Facebook
2. Give us your name and email, and let us know how you would like to help by taking this brief survey
3. Help with a Reach Out and Read project activity at least once per year
As a member of the Friends Board, there are many ways you can help show your support for Reach out and Read. Examples include:
• Get a friend to “like” the ROR Illinois Facebook page
• Volunteer to read at a ROR Illinois site. You can find a Reach Out and Read Program in your Illinois community through our interactive map.
• Attend a fundraising event
• Write for the quarterly newsletter
We know there are many doctors, nurses, parents, community members, business leaders and others who believe in the mission of Reach Out and Read and want to be a part of it somehow. The Friends Board is an easy way to show your support. Please join us today!

The Associates Board
The Reach Out and Read Illinois Associates Board is an active group of young professionals focused on planning media and fundraising events to support ROR Illinois. Our Associates Board holds monthly meetings and have recently held a successful ‘bar night’ fundraiser as well as a 3-course dinner fundraiser at the Publican Restaurant in Chicago. More exciting fundraising events are in the works!
We encourage enthusiastic groups of friends or colleagues with a passion for literacy promotion to join this board or to start their own! Do you have a group of friends who would come together to plan a fun event for a great cause? We want to hear from you! We hope that Associates Boards will form and find ways to support ROR Illinois from:
• Coworkers at a company
• Pediatric residents at an academic medical center
• Medical students, or early childhood education students, at a university program
• Book clubs
• Alumni groups
• Any group of friends!
Please contact Annie Conway, chair of the ROR Illinois Associates Board for more information on current activity, or contact the Reach Out and Read Illinois office at RORILinfo@illinoisaaap.com or call 312/733-1026, ext 204 or 202 if you would like to discuss starting your own Associates Board.
