Reach Out and Read prepares America’s youngest children to succeed in school by partnering with doctors to prescribe books and encourage families to read together.
Reach Out and Read makes literacy promotion a standard part of pediatric primary care, so that children grow up with books and a love of reading. Locally, the Illinois Chapter, American Academy of Pediatrics (ICAAP) became the proud leader of this innovative and exciting program in 2006. ICAAP’s mission is to promote the right of all children to live happy, safe, and healthy lives through its 2,300 dedicated physician members. In the last 5 years Reach Out and Read Illinois has distributed more than 750,000 books to more than 600,000 children and their families participating in Reach Out and Read.
Reach Out and Read is an evidence-based nonprofit organization that promotes early literacy and school readiness in pediatric exam rooms nationwide by giving new books to children and advice to parents about the importance of reading aloud.
Reach Out and Read builds on the unique relationship between parents and medical providers to develop critical early reading skills in children, beginning at 6 months of age. The 3.9 million families served annually by Reach Out and Read read together more often, and their children enter kindergarten better prepared to succeed, with larger vocabularies, stronger language skills, and a six-month developmental edge over their peers. In Illinois alone there are 126 Reach Out and Read clinical locations, serving nearly 137,000 children and their families while distributing more than 161,000 books annually.
